Laser cutting and engraving instructions

Make the outer cutting line of an object black. This is not the working plane of the entire drawing. Internal cut lines Are the cut lines that fall within the outer contour, think of holes in a square for example. Make these internal cut lines red.

Line engraving

Instead of engraving a flat surface, which takes a lot of time, it is also possible to have the laser cut quickly at low power. It's as if it's drawing on the material. Make engraving lines green.

Plane engraving

Here, the laser moves like a printer, burning off a layer at a time. As a result, the engraving area becomes slightly recessed in the material. Make the engraving areas blue.


2. Check your drawing

Double lines, crossing lines, and open contour lines should be removed from the drawing for the best results. Double lines in a drawing cause longer cutting and/or engraving times. Additionally, the result will be less accurate. Crossing lines can often be connected or combined to reduce cutting and/or engraving time. Open contours can cause an object to be cut out incorrectly.

Especially with flat engraving, it's essential to pay close attention to the lines. Tips for removing these lines are in step 5.

Please note: ensure that texts are outlined.
By creating an outline of texts, texts are no longer seen as a font but as lines. These lines always remain in the correct place in the drawing where texts as fonts can sometimes shift, or if we don't have the font, they are not displayed correctly.

3. Format

The maximum size for laser cutting materials is 1200 mm x 1200 mm.

For flat engraving, there is a maximum dimension of 1150 mm x 1150 mm. Because the laser head moves back and forth like a printer, the laser needs an additional 25 mm of space on both sides to maneuver.

In some machines, the bed can be lowered by 400 mm. This makes it possible to engrave objects up to 400 mm in height. These objects must fit within the area of 1200 x 1200 mm.

The machine can also be opened at the front and back. This allows longer objects to be inserted with a maximum width of 1200 mm and a height of 30 mm.

Please note: Our materials come in standard sizes of 900 x 600 mm, 600 x 450 mm, and 300 x 200 mm. Sheets larger than 900 x 600 mm can be supplied upon consultation.


4. Margin

Maintain a margin of at least 5 mm relative to the work surface (the size of the plate).

The plates are placed by hand under the laser head, and the starting point is determined by eye. With a margin of 5 mm, we have enough leeway to position the plates so that everything fits perfectly.

5. Nesting

Place as many parts as possible that need to be cut from the same material on one work surface.

Keep between the different parts at least a space of 1 mm. Are there many identical squares in the drawing? Place them tightly next to each other so that the double lines can be removed again. This will save a few cutting seconds.


6. File Format

Luxigo works best with technical drawings saved as .AI (Illustrator), .DXF (CAD Programs), or .RLD (RDWorks – Laser Software).

These file types can be loaded directly into the laser software.

We cannot directly open other file types such as .svg, .eps, .dwg, .jpg, .png, and .psd in the laser software, so we must convert them first.

Please note: Ensure that texts are outlined. This converts letters into lines that can be easily read by Luxigo.

In Illustrator, the “create outline” function can be used. In CAD programs, there is often an “Explode” command that converts text into lines.


7. Programs

Luxigo uses the RDWorks laser program (free) to load and download drawings to the machines.

In addition, Luxigo has Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape (free), and FreeCAD (free).

With these programs, it is possible to create vector files that are suitable for the laser software.

8. Instructions

Luxigo has created instructions for the following programs. Please try to adhere to the following settings and/or follow the instructions as closely as possible so that we can prepare and email a quote as quickly as possible.

Outside cut line: Black – rgb(0,0,0) – line

Internal cut line: Red – rgb(255,0,0) – line

Line engraving Green – rgb(0,255,0) – line

Flat engraving Blue - rgb(0,0,255) - fill (no stroke)
